2022 Tarn Taran Church desecration case: Punjab Police arrests key accused Jaswinder Munshi

Amritsar,  June 9 –     Amritsar Rural Police in an intelligence based operation has solved the 2022 Tarn Taran Church Desecration case with the arrest of alleged key accused Jaswinder Singh alias Munshi of Talwandi Sobha Singh in district Tarn Taran, said Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav here on Sunday in a official statement .

Police teams have also recovered one illegal 9mm pistol along with one magazine and two live cartridges, one Splendor Motorcycle and one mobile phone from the possession of arrested accused person.

As per the information, four unidentified persons with their faces covered had vandalised statues of Lord Jesus and Mother Mariam at a Church in Thakkarpura village of district of Tarn Taran and fled after setting the Pastor’s car on fire in August 31, 2022. In connection with the incident, the FIR no. 148 dated 31-8-2022 had been registered under sections 295-A, 452, 427, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 25 of the Arms Act at Sadar Patti Police Station in Tarn Taran.

 DGP Gaurav Yadav said that during preliminary investigations, it was revealed by accused Jaswinder Munshi that he along with his associate Gurwinder Singh alias Afridi of village Tut, Tarn Taran and two other accomplices had committed desecration at Church and had also set afire the car of a Pastor in August 2022. Further investigations are on, he said.

Sharing operation details, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amritsar Rural Satinder Singh said that following an intel-input that accused Jaswinder alias Munshi is going to deliver weapon consignment on his black Splendor motorcycle, Police teams laid a special Naka in the area of Police Station Chatiwind and managed to arrest the accused person after recovering a pistol from his possession. Police teams are on manhunt to nab accused Gurwinder Afridi and two other accused persons involved in the desecration of the Church, he added.

 A fresh FIR no. 71 dated 09/06/2024 has been registered under section 25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Chatiwind in Amritsar.
