25 percent of ‘Delhi budget’ allocated only to education: Atishi

New Delhi : Delhi Education Minister Atishi recently highlighted the significant impact the Arvind Kejriwal government has had on the education sector in the capital, emphasising that it is the only government in India to allocate 25 percent of its total budget to education.

In a press conference, Atishi announced that 14 new schools are under construction across Delhi, along with 1,541 new classrooms in existing schools.

Atishi contrasted the current state of government schools with their condition before 2015, noting that prior to the AAP administration, Delhi’s schools were in a state of disrepair. Classrooms were overcrowded, often accommodating up to 150 students, and facilities like blackboards, electricity, and basic infrastructure were severely lacking. Atishi argued that these conditions made it nearly impossible to deliver quality education.

Under the Kejriwal government, she claimed, these issues have been addressed, and Delhi’s government schools now rival, and in some cases surpass, private schools in terms of infrastructure. She highlighted that from 1947 to 2014, only 24,000 rooms were built in government schools across the city, but between 2015 and 2024, the Kejriwal administration added 22,711 rooms. These new facilities come equipped with modern amenities such as smart boards, advanced laboratories, libraries, sports facilities, and high-quality desks.

Atishi also accused the BJP-led central government of targeting Chief Minister Kejriwal and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, both of whom she claimed have been unjustly jailed in a “false case.” Despite these challenges, she reaffirmed the AAP government’s commitment to improving education in Delhi. She asserted that while the BJP may have imprisoned Kejriwal and Sisodia, it cannot hinder their mission to enhance the city’s educational infrastructure. The ongoing construction projects are part of Kejriwal’s vision to provide top-quality education to all students across Delhi.
