56% drug addicts became peddlers, 86% drug suppliers became smugglers

According to a survey by Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Rohtak , drugs are being illegally smuggled in our country from neighbouring states Pakistan, Nepal and Afghanistan. The report reveals that 83.94% intoxicated drugs are being smuggled illegally in our country from Pakistan through terrorists as well as cross border, 5.05% drugs from Nepal and 4.24% drugs from Afghanistan. It was observed that those consuming drugs were attracted towards smuggling and sale of drugs due to excessive profits in this business. Few drug suppliers during survey told IIM team that drugs procured at the price Rs 1 lakh is generally sold at the price up to Rs 10 lakh in retail. During recent action by Narcotic Drug Bureau at Mumbai most of the prominent suppliers of drugs to Bollywood film industry initially were drug addicts, later adopted the profession of drug peddlers due to heavy profit margins.

IIM survey also reveals that 78.10% people usually using drugs gradually started selling drugs. Nearly 86.70% drug addicts used to procure drugs for themselves started selling the same to others and indulged in this illicit business. Prof, Dhiraj Sharma Director IIM told that their team conducted a survey in Punjab, Delhi and Gujarat having discussion with 872 person of both sexes including 97.36% (849) males and 2.64% (23) females involved in this illicit business. On the condition of anonymity 77.06% drug pedlars disclosed that drugs are being smuggled in India from other countries. Prof. Sharma said, among those drug pedlars interviewed by IIM team  included 34.05% (297) between age 21-30 years, 27.98% (244) between age 31-40 years, 27.40% (239) between age 41-50 years and 10.55% (92) above age 51 years.

Prof. Sharma told that maximum quantity of drugs are being sold at the pubs and bars, followed by other places including  restaurants, road side dhabas, hotels, educational institutes and University campus. Nearly 86% people consuming drugs told that music encourages and entertain them while taking drugs. Whereas nearly 79% drug addicts told that they are impressed by glamour when see Bollywood stars shown taking drugs on the screen. Most of the youths as well as aged persons said that they feel relaxed from mental tension as well as depression after taking drugs.
