Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research successfully treated 57 Deaf & Dumb Children

Amritsar: Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences & Research, Sri Amritsar organized a function for 57 children who were deaf and mute by birth and Institute successfully treated with Cochlear Implant Surgery, these 57 children all aged between 3 to 5 years. Most of them are now able to speak fluently and at par with normal children of their age. Under “SOUND” project, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences is screening on an average 180 newborn children per month for deafness by using OAE test. Bibi Jagir Kaur Ji, President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar and Chancellor, Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Sri Amritsar especially attended the function particularly organized for these children by the Institute.

On this occasion three to five years aged children who were successfully cured enchanted the entire Sangat by reciting Kirtan, Playing Tabla, Recitation information of Panj Kakari, Poems etc. The parents of these children, doctors and all the Sangat seems emotional and happy after watching the performance of these children.

Addressing on the occasion, the President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Bibi Jagir Kaur lauded the doctors of the hospital for successfully treating 57 children (36 males, 21 females) by using cochlear implants. Further she said that the cost of cochlear implant surgery is around Rs. 7,00,000/- and SGPC helped 10 children in their treatment by providing 50 per cent assistance for their surgery last year. She said that these children who were born deaf and dumb from their childhood are now able to learn and speak like normal children after treatment and assured that SGPC will continue to assist such children in future as well.

The President, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Bibi Jagir Kaur Ji also inaugurated the newly constructed state-of-the-art central AC 86-room hostel building at Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Valla. She said that Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research and Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Amritsar were the first choice of the medical students. Therefore, the management of the university and the college is constantly striving to modernize the basic facilities of the medical students.

A Governing Body Meeting of Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Amritsar was also held today, which was presided over by Bibi Jagir Kaur, Chancellor, Sri Guru Ram Das University of Health Sciences, Amritsar. A number of decisions were taken in this meeting in which approval was given to set up Department of Emergency Medicine and Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
