NCRB Report: 66,01,285 crimes reported in 2020

According to National Crime Report Bureau (NCRB), 66,01,285 criminal cases were registered in the country during past year 2020, which witnessed drop in crime cases against women, children, rapes and kidnappings as compared to previous year 2019, whereas cases of murder, cyber crime, theft and snatching were increased during the year. Out of total number of 66,01285 criminal cases registered by the police in 2020 include 42,54,366 cases registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 23,46,929 cases  registered under Special & Local Lodge (SLL) as against total number of 51,56,158 cases registered in the year 2019.

According to report, 4,05,326 crimes against women were registered in the country during year 2019 and 3,78,236 crime cases against women were registered during year 2018. The number of such crimes against women were reduced to 3,71,503 in the year 2020 on an average 77 rape cases reported daily, which included 1,11,549 cases were related to torture by husband and other members of the family, 85,392 cases of sexual harassment, 62,300 kidnapping cases, 28,046 rape cases, 3,741 cases of attempt to rape, 6,966 cases of dowry demand and 105 cases of acid attack on females. Similarly, the number of crime against children also reduced  to 1,28,531 in 2020 as compared to 1,48,090 cases in 2019.

Out of total number of 28,016 rape cases registered in the year 2020 more than  28153 females were sexually molested included 25,498 adults, 2655 children and minors of age below 18. Information reveals, the number of sexually assaulted females was much more since large number of such type of cases are usually not reported to police Among rape victims included maximum number of 5210 victims from Rajasthan. Whereas, according to NCRB report the number of rape cases was registered as 32,033 cases in the year 2019,  33,356 cases in the year 2018 and 32,559 in the year 2017.

As regard cases of murders, on an average 80 murders cases were registered every day in the country with the total number of 29,143 persons were reported killed during year, which included 3779 persons killed in U.P and among victims 35.9% were between age 18 to 30 years, 38.5% between age 31 to 40 years and 18.4% between age 41 to 60 years killed during the year as compared to 28,915 persons reported killed  in the year 2019. NCRB information reveals, fall in kidnapping cases was registered in year 2020 with 84,805 kidnapping cases were reported to police which included 56,591 children as compared to1,05,032 kidnapping cases  registered in 2019.

Drastic hike in cyber crimes was recorded in the country in year 2020 in which 50,035 cases were registered during the year which included 30,142 cheating cases on internet, 4047 cases of on-line fraud, 1194 cases related to credit-debit card frauds, 1039 cases of OTP fraud, 2160 cases of ATM fraud, 972 cases of threatening to females, 149 cases of fake profiles, 578 cases of fake news and 98 cases of data theft. According to NCRB report, in the year 2019 over 44,735 cyber crimes were registered which included 30,442 cheating cases and 27,248 miscellaneous cyber crimes cases.
