New Delhi : Gagan Wadhwa was diagnosed with mouth cancer, but he refused to stay down about it for long. Instead, he took up bodybuilding, strengthening his body and channeling his frustration into the sport. A year after and not only has he beaten the cancer, he’s got body physique.
A year ago when Gagan was not able to open his mouth and the internal tissues of mouth got damaged severely and bursted, he visited a doctor for consultation, his world came to a halt when he got diagnosed with mouth cancer. Instead of letting the disease weigh him down, however, he decided to fight back. He was suggested immediate surgery followed by sessions of Radiation therapy. After the surgery, Radiation therapy helped immensely in curing the cancer completely and giving a new life to Gagan. With support from his family and doctors, Gagan kept up his battle against cancer and eventually triumphed over it.
Dr. Vineet Nakra, Radiation Oncologist at Max Super Speciality Hospital Vaishali who treated Gagan said ” Radiation therapy is an extremely targeted treatment precisely acting on cancer wherever it may be in the body. This allows the cancer cells to be killed or be reduced in number while safeguarding most of the healthy organs and tissues in the body. For treating Gagan we used Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) which are advanced therapies that deliver radiation with higher degrees of precision, hence the patient faces minimal side effects “
The treatment for cancers such as the head and neck have transformed tremendously over the years, patients often worry while undergoing treatment for these cancers. Cancers which are collectively known as head and neck cancers usually begin in the mouth, throat, or the voice box.
After successfully recovering from cancer Gagan Wadhwa said “When one faces challenges or diseases in life, such passion gives you strength and motivates you to get back to normal life. Dr. Vineet Nakra and team almost gave me a second life ,now I can go back to the gym and follow my passion. I want to convey to everybody who faces such health issues in life to not lose hope and aim to beat it”.

Gagan is now back to his Gym and is living a very happy and healthy life. He has fully recovered and is declared cancer-free. People like Gagan are not merely cancer survivors but a source of inspiration for all those Cancer patients who are either struggling with it or losing hope.
More individuals are living longer with this disease with increased awareness and early detection. The patients need to speak up and get the required help to maximize their quality of life. With the country taking a lead in cancer treatment, it’s high time when more people should know about the advanced treatment options and avail its benefits.
