New Delhi : According to a research, 40 percent of the country’s MPs have criminal cases against them. 25 percent of them have serious crimes like murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and rape cases. Such sensational information has emerged in the report of the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The report was prepared by ADR and National Election Watch (NEW) after verifying the election affidavits of 763 MPs out of a total of 776 seats in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The highest number of criminal cases are against BJP MPs in the Rajya Sabha. Even the two Rajya Sabha MPs against whom there is a serious criminal case like murder are also BJP MPs. This information emerged from the report of Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW). 

Currently 4 Lok Sabha and 1 Rajya Sabha seats are vacant. Again, 4 Rajya Sabha seats in Jammu and Kashmir are yet to be decided. Besides, the information of 1 Lok Sabha MP and 3 Rajya Sabha MPs was not available. According to the report, out of 763 MPs, 306 (40 per cent) reported having criminal cases against them. 194 (25 percent) admitted to having a serious criminal record. 

Kerala tops in the state-wise list in terms of percentage. Out of the 29 MPs in the state, 23 (79 percent) have criminal cases against them.

MPs are not lagging behind in terms of property. According to the ADR report, the per capita wealth of MPs in the two houses of Parliament is around 38.33 million. 53 out of 763 Member of Parliament of both the house are millionaires.
