Government released Agenda, 4 bills in ‘tentative list’ for Parliament’s Special Session

New Delhi : There were big speculations about the government proposing a “One Nation, One Election” bill in the ensuing Special Session, there was no mention of it in the tentative list shared by the Central Government. There was also another speculation story taking round about the government bringing a resolution to “rename India as Bharat”. The Government released a ‘tentative list’ of the agenda for Parliament’s special session from September 18 to 22. The tentative agenda included 2 bills which were passed in the Rajya Sabha on August 3 itself. The said Bills are, “The Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2023” and “The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023” – to be taken up in the Lok Sabha.

On the other hand, Rajya Sabha is set to discuss “The Post Office Bill, 2023” and “The Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023”. These 2 bills were introduced in the Rajya Sabha on August 10.

Special Sessions was called 7th time after Independence to till August, 2023 and this time it will be 8th time Special Session is going to be held. In 1977, Special Session of the Rajya Sabha was held in February for 2 days to extend President Rules in Tamil Nadu and Nagaland. In 1991, 2 days Special Session was held in June for the approval of the President’s rule in Haryana. In 1992, it was August 9, midnight Session to mark the 50th Anniversary of the Quit India Movement. In 1997, 26th August to 1st September to celebrate Golden jubilee of India’s Independence. In 2008, Special Session of the Lok Sabha in July for a trust vote after Left Parties withdrew support from the Manmohan Singh Government. In 2015, November 26, Special Session to celebrate the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. B R Ambedkar. In 2017, June 30, midnight Special Session was called for Indirect Tax means GST Reforms.

 As per the government’s notice, except formal parliamentary business, a discussion will be held on the subject ‘Parliamentary Journey of 75 years starting from Samvidhan Sabha – Achievements, Experiences, Memories and Learnings”. According to officials, the session will begin in the old Parliament building on 18th September and shift to the new Parliament building on the next day. The shift to the new Parliament building will coincide with Ganesh Chaturthi on September 19, considered auspicious to make new beginnings.
