New Delhi :  The Indian team, which was in excellent form, defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs in the World Cup. This is India’s biggest win in the history of the World Cup. India improved its 16-year-old record. In the 2007 World Cup, the team defeated Bermuda by 257 runs. With seven consecutive wins in the on-going World Cup, the team also reached the semi-finals and secured the top spot in the points table with 14 points. Sri Lanka remains in seventh place with four points. The team will now have to rely on the other teams to reach the semi-finals.

Batting first, India scored 357 runs for eight wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is the team’s best score in the current season. In the second inning, the Indian bowlers bowled Sri Lanka out for 55 runs in 19.4 overs.

The Indian bowlers displayed excellent bowling. The Indian fast bowlers had no match for the Sri Lankan batsmen. Sri Lankan batsmen looked helpless in front of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami. Five Sri Lankan batsmen returned to the dressing room with zero scores.

The Sri Lankan team, which came in response to the Indians’ 357 runs, got off to the worst possible start. Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Pathum Nishanka with the very first ball of the Sri Lankan innings. Dimuth Karunaratne was then the victim of Mohammad Siraj. Dimuth Karunaratne also failed to open his account. When the third Sri Lankan player was also run out, the team was down to two runs. Mohammed Shami was the most successful pitcher for India. Mohammed Shami dismissed five batsmen.

Mohammad Mohammad Siraj took three wickets. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja were also successful once each. Mohammed Shami became the most successful Indian wicket-taker for India in the ODI World Cup. With this historic record, he left former legendary fast bowlers Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan behind. Shami took 45 wickets in the 14th inning of the tournament. Veterans Javagal Srinath and Zaheer Khan took 44 wickets for India in the ODI World Cup.

Earlier, Shubhman Gill (92 runs), Virat Kohli (88 runs), and Shreyas Iyer (82 runs) missed out on scoring a century. Virat Kohli missed out on scoring his 49th ODI century and could not equal Sachin Tendulkar’s century record. Sachin has 49 ODI centuries to his credit. Kohli has scored 48 centuries so far. In this match, Virat overtook Chris Gayle in terms of the most runs scored in the ICC ODI tournament.
