Punjab Police busts trans-border narcotic smuggling network ; one held with 3.5 kg drug

Amritsar : Commissionerate of Amritsar Police has busted a trans-border narcotic smuggling network with the arrest of a drug smuggler identified as Gurmej Singh of Bhindi Saidan Ajnala after recovering 3.5kg heroin and one lakh drug money from his possession, said Commissioner of Police (CP) Amritsar Ranjit Singh Dhillon here on Thursday.

Apart from recovering heroin consignment, Police teams have also impounded the CD Deluxe motorcycle, on which the accused was travelling.

Dhillon said that accused Gurmej Singh was directly in touch with Pak-based drug smuggler  and has been engaged in drug trafficking. Drones were being used to transport the drug consignments from Pakistan, he added.

Investigations are on to establish backward and forward linkages in this case, he added.

Sharing operation details, Dhillon said that the police teams had got reliable inputs that drug smuggler Gurmej Singh has retrieved the drug consignment and was waiting to deliver it to someone in area of Chherhata Amritsar.

He said that acting swiftly on the inputs, Police teams laid a trap and successfully arrested the accused from the area of Ghanupur Kale. Further investigations are on, he added.

In this regard, a case FIR no.126 dated 31/07/2024 has been registered under sections 21C, 27A of the NDPS Act at Police Station Chherhata in Amritsar.
