Students dreaming of studying in Canada as well as parents should think twice before making a decision because the present scenario is fast changing and reality is completely opposite to what is seen there. This was revealed by Sanjay Verma while talking to media persons, who was posted there as Indian High Commissioner and has been recently called back by the government. He said, enrolment in substandard colleges in Canada is dangerous for the students, as seen Indian students who wish to study there should think seriously about it, despite spending lakhs of rupees by the parents many students get admission there in substandard colleges and do not get any job opportunities as a result, they become depressed and are forced to take steps like suicide as usually seen bodies of two students used to arrive from Canada every week during his tenure when at least two bodies of students were sent from Canada to India every week after failing they committed suicide rather than face their parents. Sanjay Verma said that students go there with dreams of a bright future, but many times their bodies come back in body bags.
Verma said parents should research the colleges thoroughly before making a decision to send their wards through unscrupulous agents also responsible for getting Indian students admitted in little-known third degree institutes. Many such colleges hardly conduct one or a couple of classes in a week as such they will study only that much and their skill development remains accordingly. He said that after this it is usually seen that a student with an engineering degree is often seen driving a cab, selling tea-samosa at a shop, working as a waiter and many times washing utensils in a restaurant. Therefore, the ground reality there is not very encouraging. The Indian diplomat said that after going to Canada, the students after getting education there and most of their parents had sold their lands and other assets or taken loans from the banks and financiers to fulfill the desire of their childern settle abroad become mentally sick and at times attempt committing suicides, since after this the student cannot think of returning, because he has nothing left to return and prefer to commit suicide. Verma said that in the last about 18 months, he got many students to record videos about their problems and upload them on You tube.
In reply to a media question as regard problems being published as regard Canada government has resolved only five out of the 26 requests sent by India for the extradition of Khalistani activists and remaining 21 requests are yet pending, Verma said that only a limited number of Canadian Sikhs are supporting the Khalistani activities and there is possibility, Canada government will reduce the number of immigrants in future. According to him, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has admitted that his government has failed to strike the right balance regarding immigrants, now the government has decided to reduce the number of new immigrants planning to allow five lakh new permanent residents to come to the country every year for the next couple of years, however he said that immigration is necessary for Canada’s future, but it should be controlled.
Verma said that Punjabi students are disillusioned due to the differences between India and Canada government, now they are moving to other countries seeking admission abroad. He admitted that Canadian Khalistanis target Indian students and cautioned parents should think twice before sending their wards for study at Canada due to facing different types of negative influences, stating that there is a threat from Khalistani activists to the larger Indian community in Canada at present, since there are limited jobs in the country, and so the students being targeted. He said that some students have also been persuaded by Khalistanis to take photographs or videos of themselves shouting anti-India slogans or insulting the Indian flag.
