A Conclave of Global Expertise in Metals & Materials, Inaugurated by Karnataka CM Shri Siddaramaiah
Bengaluru : The vibrant city of Bengaluru transformed into a hub of innovation and collaboration as the 78th Annual Technical Meet (ATM) of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) commenced with Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, inaugurated the prestigious three-day conclave, marking a momentous occasion for the global metals and materials industry.
Flanked by dignitaries such as D.K. Shivakumar, Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, MB Patil, Minister of Large & Medium Scale Industries and Infrastructure Development, and Sajjan Jindal, President of IIM and Chairman of JSW Group, the event exuded a vibrant mix of tradition and modernity.

The IIM-ATM 2024 has drawn 1,700 delegates from around the world, representing the best minds in metallurgy, materials science, and manufacturing technologies. Organized by JSW Steel in collaboration with the Ministry of Steel and several regional IIM chapters, the event showcases India’s leadership in metals and materials while promoting global dialogue.
In his keynote address, Shri Sajjan Jindal highlighted the pivotal role of India’s steel industry in driving economic resilience and sustainability. He emphasized, “As the world moves toward decarbonization, India’s steel industry is setting new benchmarks in green production. Beyond steel, metals and advanced materials are transforming renewable energy, electric mobility, aerospace, and healthcare, redefining industries and improving lives.”
Highlights of the Conclave
- International Symposium on Transformational Technologies: Themed “Transformational Technologies in Materials & Manufacturing,” this symposium serves as the cornerstone of IIM-ATM 2024. It offers a platform to showcase breakthroughs in materials science, metallurgical advancements, and sustainable manufacturing.
- Technical Exhibition and Poster Session: With 65 companies participating, the exhibition highlights cutting-edge innovations, giving attendees a glimpse into the future of the industry.
- IIM Core Awards: The event honored 55 trailblazers across 26 categories, with JSW Steel and Tata Steel jointly receiving the prestigious IIM Sustainability Award for their efforts in sustainable steelmaking.
- Special Tributes: Padma Vibhushan Shri Ratan Tata was lauded for his immense contributions to industry and society. Shri Venu Srinivasan, Chairman Emeritus of TVS Motor Company, received the esteemed IIM-JRD Tata Award for his leadership in Indian manufacturing.
Empowering the Next Generation
With a strong focus on inclusivity and education, the conclave hosted over 350 students from premier institutions, including IITs and IISc. Student-centric sessions bridged the gap between academia and industry, fostering dialogue on career opportunities and future trends in metals and materials.

Shri Jindal praised Karnataka’s thriving ecosystem, underscoring JSW Steel’s Vijayanagar plant as a shining example of the state’s industrial strength. “From its greenfield inception, the plant has grown into India’s largest single-location steel plant and aspires to be the largest globally,” he noted.
