Rupnagar: In a first case of its kind, Rupnagar district police arrested an alleged homosexual criminal accused of killing 10 victims of the same sexual orientation.
Identified as Ram Saroop alias Sodhi, the accused hails from village Chaura ,Tehsil Garhshankar in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab.
With his arrest, the police succeeded in cracking three murders cases unresolved in the district since January 2024.
Besides being an interesting study in criminal psychology, the way the district police led by senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gulneet Singh Khurana cracked the case using technical and human intelligence methods is creditable.
During the interrogation, the alleged accused, when faced with the credible evidence of his involvement in the murder committed on August 18, 2024, confessed to have also been involved in two other murders he had committed in the jurisdiction of Rupnagar district police.
Of the total 10 murders he confessed to have committed, the preliminary investigation revealed that other 7 were committed in the districts of Hoshiarpur and Fatehgarh Sahib.
About the alleged killer’s modus operandi, SSP Khurana said he used to take car and motorist drivers for lifts and have sexual intercourse with them and later on, he would rob and kill them.
In the first case, his victim was Harpreet Singh alias Sunny (37) of Rupnagar whose body was found on January 24, 2024 in a car near Nirankari Bhawan area under the city police station, Rupnagar.
After registration of the case, SSP Khurana constituted a team comprising SP Navneet Singh Mahal, DSP Ajay Kumar and SHO Jatin Kumar which conducted a technical investigation to trace the case by examining the circumstances from the beginning.
The second victim was identified as Mukander Singh alias Billa (34) a tractor mechanic belonging to village Begampura (Ghanoli) in the district. He was beaten to death on April 5, 2024 and his body was found at Panjehra Road, Barha Pind under the police station Kiratpur Sahib.
The third murder, which provided the breakthrough to the police, was committed on August 18, 2024. The body of Maninder Singh (37) of Kiratpur Sahib was found in the bushes in front of G.O. Petrol Pump, Manali Road. The deceased used to serve tea and water at Toll Plaza Modra.
More revelations are expected about these heinous crimes from the accused in due course of investigation after obtaining his police remand.
