‘Blue Cross of India’ Celebrates 60 Years with Release of “Memories and Milestones”

The Blue Cross of India marked a significant milestone 15th March ,2025 Saturday evening with the release of “Memories and Milestones,” a book documenting its 60-year journey. The book, authored by historian V. Sriram and Lashman, was released by Justice P.N. Prakash, Former Judge of Madras High Court. This program was held to recall the efforts made for better care of stray animals in city to manage them in scientific manner by following the aims and objectives of the kindness and compassion -“Ahimsa” under provision of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960( An Act of Parliyament).

The event was graced by esteemed guests, including Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, renowned animal rights activist and environmentalist, and A.L. Somayaji, Former Advocate General, Government of Tamil Nadu. Dr. Chinny Krishna, Co-founder of Blue Cross and Praani Mitra awardee, shared his insights on the organization’s remarkable journey.

The Blue Cross of India has been at the forefront of animal welfare in the country, pioneering initiatives like the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program, which was the first of its kind in the world. The organization has also been recognized for its transparency, receiving the Platinum Level certification from GuideStar India in 2013.

Dr. Krishna acknowledged the challenges of running an organization for 60 years, particularly in the animal welfare field. He expressed his gratitude to Maneka Sanjay Gandhi for her unwavering support and legislative efforts in promoting animal welfare.

The Blue Cross of India (BCI) has been a pioneer in animal welfare since its founding in 1959 by Captain V. Sundaram and his family. Initially known as the Animal Aid Association, the organization was formally registered as the Blue Cross of India in 1964. This marked the beginning of a remarkable journey dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of animals in India.

Over the years, BCI has achieved numerous milestones. In 1966, the organization was recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India. A significant turning point came in 1996 when BCI played a crucial role in stopping street animal killing in Chennai. This effort demonstrated the effectiveness of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) and Anti-Rabies (AR) programs in managing street animal populations and controlling rabies.

BCI’s efforts have led to a substantial reduction in human rabies cases in Chennai. In 2009, the city was declared rabies-free, a testament to the organization’s tireless work. Furthermore, BCI has been recognized for its transparency, receiving the Guide Star Platinum Seal of Transparency in 2013-14.

The organization’s achievements extend beyond its advocacy and policy work. BCI provides a range of services, including rescuing, sheltering, and providing veterinary care for animals. The organization also conducts humane education programs to promote animal welfare and animal rights. Additionally, BCI operates shelters and facilitates adoptions, offering in-patient and out-patient veterinary services, including ambulances and facilities for animal cremations.

Through its collaborative approach, BCI works closely with other NGOs in animal welfare, sharing resources and expertise to maximize their impact. As the Blue Cross of India continues to champion animal welfare, its legacy serves as a beacon of hope for a more compassionate future.
