Army of 32000 stray dogs in Ambala worries residents due to fast increasing dog bite cases

There has been a significant increase in dog bite cases not only in twin city Ambala but also all over in Haryana in the last few years which is a matter of serious concern. Despite the strict regulations issued by the state government from time to time, the cases of dog bites are witnessing fast increase. A survey in this regard conducted in twin city Ambala revealed that in the past about one year with effect from April 2022 till March 2023 as many as 3072 cases of dog bite arrived at the government hospitals, however this figure does not include the number of  cases arrived at the private hospitals. District health department information also reveals that  from with effect from April to 26th September this year as many as 969 dog bite cases arrived at the local government hospitals which included nearly 20% third degree dog bite cases and the remaining cases were identified as category 1 and Category 2 cases.

According to the health experts, people usually throw dead animals in the open, which attracts stray dogs who gradually also become habitual for the flesh and the blood of the human body and attack people in residential areas too, especially the children playing in the residential areas become their victim. According to the Municipal Corporation Ambala information the number of stray dogs has witnessed drastic increase in the past few years. A survey in this regard revealed that there were nearly 17000 stray dogs in twin city Ambala in 2016, which have now increased to nearly 32000 stray dogs at the present, which include nealry 20000 stray dogs in Ambala City and nearly 12000 stray dogs in AmbalaCantt.  While talking to the Chief Medical Officer Ambala, he said that the health department spending huge amount of money on the purchase of anti-rabies injections and the serum generally required in third degree dog bite cases, costing heavy amount to the government since the treatment in dog bite cases is being provided to the patients free of cost. Similarly, information also revealed that amount worth Rs 1.36 crore has been spent over sterilization of 15871 stray dogs in twin city Ambala in past eight years with effect from 2014 till December 2022 by the Sadar municipal committee AmbalaCantt and by the Municipal Corporation Ambala City which included 6283 stray dogs in AmbalaCantt and 9588 stray dogs in Ambala City.
Information also reveals, on an average more than 100 people are being bitten by dogs every day in Haryana, which shows the seriousness of the situation. A report of the Union Health Ministry revealed that as many as 36328 cases of dog bites surfaced in Haryana in 2021 followed by 31113 in the first 11 months of the year 2022. What statistics depict that on an average more than 3000 people are being bitten by dogs every month. In the case of dog bites, the situation is so serious that Haryana has left behind even neighboring Punjab and Himachal states. As many as 7658 and 9245 cases of dog bites were reported in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab respectively in 2021 followed by 14009 and 14300 cases in the first 11 months of 2022 and in the first eleven month of the year 2022 respectively.
