Punjab and Haryana states famous for production of milk and milk products in the country in past few years, now losing ground due to fast increasing cases of adulteration since past many years. A recent World Health Organization (WHO) report revealed that between 80 to 90% milk as well as milk products being sold in the market in both states as well as Chandigarh UT at present were found adulterated. The information by Ministry of Health too supporting the issue confirmed that during a survey adulteration in 89.2% cases was detected by them in milk and milk products sold in market in these states found injurious to consumers health due to adulteration as such Punjab and Haryana High Court against a Public Interest Litigation writ moved in the court has directed state governments as well as Legal Initiative Society to investigate and take immediate stern action against those involved in adulteration in milk and milk products causing harm to public health for their self-vested financial interest.
According to Society information, more than 70% milk products sold in the country were found not matching with the National Food Safety norms. According to WHO Report, in case strict action against those responsible for adulteration in milk and playing with the life of others will not be taken nearly 87% people in the country may suffer from serious diseases by the year 2025. According to information, our country comes in the category of excessive milk producing countries but adulteration in case of milk and milk products in those countries is much lesser than in our country.
Information reveals, nearly 14 crore litre milk is produced daily in India as against consumption of 65 crore litre milk which clearly indicates large scale adulteration going on in milk and milk products in our country to meet the requirement. Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered stern action against those involved in adulteration of milk and milk products directing Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh administration to conduct maximum raids by the officers of Food & Supply Department and take strict action against culprits strictly punished by the courts, besides bringing awareness among people about ill effects by consuming adulterated milk and milk products as well as check their quality.
Information reveals, harmful products are used for adulteration in milk by mixing detergent, caustic soda, white paint, hydro-peroxide, vanaspati oil and fertilizers which are extremely harmful for human health causing serious diseases including cancer, tuberculosis, heart and respiratory disorders.
