Chandigarh, May 9 : Amritpal Singh, the Chief of Waris Punjab De (WPD), currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh jail, Assam under the NSA, has petitioned the Punjab and Haryana High Court for a temporary release of “seven days” to file his nomination for the Lok Sabha Election 2024 from Sri Khadoor Sahib Constituency. The petition is set to be heard on Friday before Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj’s bench.
In his plea, Amritpal Singh, represented by counsel Imaan Singh Khara, requests the court to direct various official respondents to facilitate the necessary paperwork for his nomination, including the appointment of election agents and completion of formalities. The petition highlights the efforts made by Amritpal Singh and his father, including multiple letters to electoral authorities seeking guidance and assistance in filing the nomination.
Despite correspondence from Election Commission of India and directives from the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, the petitioner alleges deliberate delays by the State of Punjab and District Magistrate, Amritsar, in issuing further instructions, hindering his ability to file the nomination promptly.
The petition underscores the urgency of the matter, emphasizing the fundamental right of the petitioner to participate in the democratic process and contest the election from his chosen constituency. Amritpal Singh seeks the court’s intervention to ensure a fair opportunity to exercise his electoral rights, even while detained under the NSA.
