Amritsar, May 8 – An explosion took place on a heritage street near the Golden Temple here on Monday morning close to the spot where a blast was reported on May 6, police said.
One person suffered minor injuries, said police, adding that no significant damage was reported in Monday’s blast. The cause of the explosion is yet to be ascertained, they said.
The explosion occurred near the same spot on the heritage street leading to the Golden Temple where the one on Saturday took place, the police said.
According to an eyewitness, the explosion was reported around 6:15 am. Police and forensic teams reached the spot soon after and started collecting samples for investigation.
Locals called for a thorough probe into the two explosions.
Jasbir Singh Patti, a daily visitor to the Golden Temple for the last 20 years, said the explosions have created panic among the devotees and the police should thoroughly investigate these incidents.
One person was injured and glass facades of some buildings were damaged in Saturday’s blast.
After the explosion, Director General of Police (DGP) Goruav Yadav who reached the spot with heavy police force and talking about the description of two bombs blasted on Saturday night and on Monday Morning said, “It seems that it was a kind of low intensity bomb as locally prepared. Now we are scientifically examining all the issue from all angels”
Adding further DGP said, “As per preliminary investigation, it was noticed that no detonator and triggering mechanism were found.
So, all these things confirmed that it was surely crudely assembled and a crude bombs. It was also found that someone had assembled crude material in a container that was kept in the parking area of Sargari Parking lot and a thread was hanging from the container. Blast occurred when a thread was pulled accidently by some passerby, the container fell down and the blast went off. But it was not a sharpened attack. So there was no loss of life, only one person suffered minor injuries on Saturday and one person more suffered minor injuries in the blast that took place on Monday Morning at 6.15 a.m”.
DGP further said, “Preliminary investigation also suggests that it may be the mischief of someone. Here, at the same time we don’t rule out terror angle or purpose may be to create terror or may be to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state”.
Continuing further, DGP said, “Punjab Police is fully capable, peace and harmony of the state would be maintained.”
“Here we must appeal to people to verify the facts before they circulate any information on social media in order to avoid rumors. Situation is normal and under control as life is normal in the city and people are moving in the area as usual and nothing to worry”, DGP quipped.
Police Commissioner ADGP Naunihal Singh informed, “ A criminal case has already been registered in the police station concerned. Now the case is very sensitive. It was a kind of low intensity bomb and prepared with local material used in crackers. The incident is highly unfortunate and forced us to enhance the security significantly. Happening of such incidents with bad intentions indicates that chances of further such incidents can’t be ruled out since there is significant foot fall in this area and now police administration is fully alert and keeping hawk eyes. Some serious facts appeared during the CCTV examination and police working on it but would not share with the media due to security measure”. He said, “Some bad element has carried out such a heinous crime here with bad intention in this pious city. But police would shortly carry out the investigation to a logical conclusion and would arrest the culprit”, Singh quipped.
