Chandigarh Mayor dispute reaches High Court

Chandigarh, January 30, 2024: A petition has been filed in the Punjab-Haryana High Court on Tuesday alleging that the BJP candidate won by tampering with the ballot papers in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. The petition said that despite the AAP-Congress alliance having the majority, the presiding officer Anil Masih was accused of tampering with the ballot papers during the counting of votes.

In the petition, there are demands to cancel the process of mayor election, seal the entire record related to the election, ban the mayor from assuming office, get an investigation done into the rigging in the entire election process and conduct fresh elections under the supervision of a retired judge of the High Court. An appeal has been made to issue instructions.

The matter of mayor election of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has once again come into controversy and Congress-AAP candidate for the post of mayor, Kuldeep Kumar, alleging rigging in the election, filed a petition in the High Court demanding cancellation of the election.

It was told in the petition that the elections for Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Chandigarh Municipal Corporation were scheduled for January 30. Elections were also held on Tuesday as per the schedule, but in the Mayor election, 8 out of 20 votes of Congress-AAP were declared invalid, due to which BJP candidate was elected as Mayor.
