Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday led the Jammu and Kashmir cabinet in passing a resolution calling for the restoration of the region’s statehood.

In its first meeting, the newly formed cabinet urged the Union government to reinstate J&K’s statehood, which was revoked in 2019. Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to personally submit the resolution draft to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, the Congress, a key ally of the National Conference, has opted not to join the cabinet until statehood is officially restored.

The Indian government had abrogated Article 370 in August 2019, stripping Jammu and Kashmir of its special status and reorganizing the region into two Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
