Covid-19: India logs over 4,00,000 fresh cases and 4,092 deaths during last 24 hours

New Delhi : With more that 4,00,000 fresh cases in the second wave of Covid-19 and 4,092 deaths in the last 24 hours, coronavirus continues to pummel India. However, the numbers have declined marginally over the past three days after hitting a peak of 4,14,554 on Thursday.

However, there were early signs in the data that the second wave in the country could be reaching its peak, several states too imposed lockdown or strict curbs as covid catastrophe continues.

As per the data given by the government, Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily new cases at 10,187. It is followed by Kerala with 2,791 while Punjab reported 1,159 new cases.

The details further reads that six states account for 87.00% of the new deaths. Maharashtra saw the maximum casualties (47). Kerala follows with 16 daily deaths. Punjab reported12 deaths.

Rajasthan recorded 159 deaths and 17,921 coronavirus cases on Sunday, taking the death toll to 5,665 and the infection tally to 7,56,707

Haryana reported 13,548 new coronavirus cases, taking the case tally to 6,15,897 while 12,639 recoveries brought the active number of cases in the state to 1,16,867. Haryana recorded 151 COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the health bulletin.

In Uttar Pradesh the number of new cases of Covid-19 continued to decline while recoveries went up in the state on Saturday, health officials said. At least 26,847 fresh cases were reported while 34,721 people were declared free of coronavirus infection in the last 24 hours. During this period, total 2,23,656 Covid tests were conducted in the state.

In a first of its kind data released by the government, on Covid patients requiring critical care, shows that nearly 50,000 people are currently in ICUs while over 14,000 on ventilator support.

Mucormycosis, a fungal infection being found in Covid-19 patients with uncontrolled diabetes and prolonged intensive care unit (ICU) stay, may turn fatal if uncared.

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana extended their ongoing lockdowns till May 17 to curb the unprecedented surge of Covid-19 cases and deaths.

Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan and Puducherry will also have a two-week shutdown starting Monday, while Karnataka’s stringent lockdown will come into effect on Monday till May 24. On Saturday, Kerala came under a nine-day complete lockdown. This means that from Monday, a majority of the country will be under either a strict lockdown or lockdown-like curbs.

Maharashtra, Karnataka and Delhi are among 10 states that account for 71.75 per cent of new Covid-19 cases registered in a day, the Union health ministry said in its Sunday morning update.
