Delhi LG VK Saxena orders to curb the menace of illegal parking, improve traffic management

New Delhi : Emphasizing the critical need for road safety, Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has voiced concerns over illegal parking on roadsides, flyovers, and other areas, particularly by buses. He pointed out that such practices not only inconvenience commuters but also compromise road safety. In response, Saxena has issued a series of directives aimed at enhancing traffic management and ensuring smoother commutes across the city.

To address these challenges, joint enforcement teams made up of the Traffic Police and the Transport Department will be established to monitor and prevent the overloading of commercial vehicles and the overcrowding of passenger buses. The Traffic Police will also identify key congestion points and deploy dedicated teams to ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

In a move to streamline the issuance of fines, the process of sending challans via WhatsApp will be accelerated, providing violators with timely information and enabling them to pay fines conveniently. This is expected to increase the rate of challan realization. Additionally, AI-based Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed to capture traffic violations, with consequent challans issued through SMS and WhatsApp. This approach will reduce human intervention and improve coordination between the Transport Department and Traffic Police.

Further measures include a plan to relocate ISBT Kashmere Gate to alleviate traffic congestion in that area. A drive will also be conducted to impound illegal e-rickshaws operating without valid registration, as they contribute to congestion and pose safety risks to passengers.

Moreover, the Transport Department, along with the MCD and Traffic Police, will develop an action plan to implement the Parking Policy. Joint drives by the Traffic and Transport Departments will ensure compliance with PUC certification and enforcement.

Special enforcement drives will target bus lane regulations, especially on major routes such as Ring Road, Airport Road, and national highways, with zero tolerance for violations. These initiatives are designed to significantly enhance road safety and traffic management in Delhi, addressing the pressing issues of illegal parking and traffic violations.
