ECI team to meet J&K parties over Assembly polls

The Election Commission of India is set to meet with political parties in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday to gather feedback regarding the conduct of Assembly elections in the Union Territory. The region has been without an elected government for over six years.

The ECI team includes Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu.

The office of the chief electoral officer, Jammu and Kashmir, on Tuesday issued letters to various political parties, inviting them for a meeting with the EC.

This visit follows a Supreme Court directive from last year, which instructed the commission to conduct assembly elections in J&K by September 30, 2024.

In March, Kumar, who was the only member of the three-member commission to visit the Union Territory at that time, assured the political parties and people of Jammu and Kashmir that the poll panel would soon conduct elections in the region.
