TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement) is a minimally invasive procedure used in cardiology to treat aortic valve stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve doesn’t open properly, causing reduced blood flow from the heart.
In the past, fixing this valve problem required open-heart surgery, which can be risky and take a long time to recover from. But with TAVR, doctors can now fix the valve without cutting open the chest.
Instead, they use a small tube (catheter) to insert a new artificial valve into the heart. This new valve takes the place of the old, damaged one and allows blood to flow smoothly again.
The great thing about TAVR is that it’s much less invasive, meaning it’s safer and patients can recover more quickly. It’s especially beneficial for older or weaker patients who may not be able to handle traditional open-heart surgery.
TAVR expert Dr Datta is the former director of Army Hospital(R&R) Delhi and has also served as the head of Armed Forces Medical Services while heading all medical services, hospitals and healthcare for the Indian army, navy and air force.
