National Green Tribunal (NGT) is going to have a meeting with the officers of Delhi, Haryana and U.P states on November 4 as regard fast increasing pollution in Yamuna canal water when flowing inside Delhi between Wazirabad and Okhla Bairaj. A five members committee of Central Pollution Control Board taking care of Yamuna canal water and officers of Water Board at Delhi expressed worry over water getting more and more polluted day by day causing severe harm to the health of residents in Delhi. Water samples are being collected daily at village Palla before entry of Yamuna canal in Delhi, at Wazirabad Bairaj, at ITO bridge, few other points on the route and finally checked at Okhla Bairaj after which the canal leaves Delhi and submit report of water samples to NGT. Information reveals that Yamuna canal water gets polluted due to throwing not only garbage in it but also sewerage water from surrounding residential colonies on the way when it passes through nearly 23 drains at places which makes water highly polluted and unfit for use.
According to Central Pollution Control Committee and Delhi Water Board water sample reports collected at various places on the route show presence of increasing quantity of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) which should not exceed 8 and quantity of Dissolved Oxygen (DO) does not fall less than 5.9 and after covering about 28 km distance when canal reaches Yamuna Okhla Bairaj the canal water turn to highly polluted containing garbage, factory wastes, poisonous water and even sewerage contents thrown in the canal through drains thus recording BOD as 73 and DO as zero making water in the canal highly polluted and unfit for use. During checking quality of water during month October end this year BOD in Yamuna canal water was calculated as 02 and DO as 9.7 at village Palla, which was recorded as 53 BOD and 0-8 DO at ITO Bridge and when it reached Okhla Bairaj BOD was recorded as 73 and DO as zero which clearly indicated that the quality of Yamuna canal water starts worsening as soon as it passes through area inside Delhi.
