Panjim (Goa): Goa rocked for four days to the sights and sounds of the famed international “Carnaval” from March 1 to 4, as dancers and floats representing the environment swayed and sashayed to musical tunes down the streets of the Capital Panjim, Vasco, Margao and Mapuca cities, besides other smaller places.
The message highlighting conservation of wildlife and nature came across strongly as the various tableaux displayed tigers, bison, turtles and even pangolins that are the victims of poaching gangs across the world.

The Carnaval’s lead float was led by the traditional “King Momo” and Carnival Queen as, dressed in their festive best, men and women danced to the popular Goan and Portuguese songs that even had some of the crowds joining in the song-n-dance.
The 50 colourful floats also displayed various themes including the fishing community of Goa whose fishing expertise bags not only marine creatures, but also draws huge numbers of global tourists seeking to experience the ’Susegad’ fish-n-curry culture of the State.

Meanwhile, “Samba Square” in the Capital of Panjim highlighted culinary experiences in an eclectic mix including Mexican, Jamaican and Lebanese food for tourists and locals.
The Carnaval marks the four-day celebrations of merriment before “Ash Wednesday”, which heralds the 40-day season of Lent for Christians the world over.
