New Delhi : The Indian team created history in Cape Town by defeating South Africa by seven wickets in the second Test to end the series in a 1-1 draw. This victory represents a significant record for the Indian team as it is the first Asian country to beat South Africa in a Test match in Cape Town. It is also the first time in 31 years that the Indian team has won in Cape Town. Earlier, the Indian team had suffered a defeat by an innings and 32 runs in the first Test match.
This match is also the shortest Test match in the history of Test cricket as only 107 overs were played. In the first innings, the South African team, who usually dominate against India in Cape Town, were dismissed by just 55 runs. Aiden Markram scored a quick hundred in the second innings, but the entire team could only score 176 runs.
This win in South Africa is the fifth time India have won a Test match against the country. Previously there were victories in 2021, 2018, 2010 and 2006, but this is the first time India have won in Cape Town. In the second Test, South Africa could only score 55 runs in the first innings, while India scored 153 runs to take a significant lead of 98-run lead. South Africa then collapsed in the second innings with 176 runs and set India a target of just 79 runs. The Indian team achieved this target in just a day and a half, losing just three wickets in the process. Mohammad Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were the heroes of India’s victory. Siraj picked up six wickets for just 16 runs in the first innings while Bumrah caused havoc with six wickets for 61 runs in the second innings.
Batting first, Virat Kohli top-scored with 46 runs in the first innings, followed by Shubman Gill with 36 runs and Rohit Sharma with 39 runs. In the second innings, Yashasvi Jaiswal top scored with 28 runs while Rohit remained unbeaten on 17 runs. South Africa made three changes to their line-up for the second Test, while the Indian team made two changes.
In the hosts’ team, Lungi Ngidi made his debut in place of Gerald Coetzee, Tristan Stubbs replaced Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj replaced Keegan Pietersen. At the same time, India have brought in Ravindra Jadeja in place of Ravichandran Ashwin and Mukesh Kumar in place of Shardul Thakur.
In the 147-year history of Test cricket, it has never happened before that a player of a team has lost seven times in an innings. In the Test between India and South Africa, which began on 3 January, six batsmen were out for 0. Team India came very close to equalling this shameful record. Had any other batsman of the Indian team also been out for 0, it would have been the first time in the 147-year history of Test cricket. For the first time, six Pakistani players were out for nought against the West Indies in Karachi in 1980. After that, there have been many times in Test cricket when six players have been out for nought in an innings.
