Jamaat-e-Islami Hind appeals for peace and an end to violence in Bangladesh

New Delhi: The President of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH), Syed Sadatullah Husaini has expressed concern over the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and appealed to the officials  now responsible for handling this emergency  situation in  Bangladesh to take immediate and decisive actions for restoring peace and stability in the country.

In a statement to the media, Syed Sadatullah Husaini said, “Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) expresses deep concern over the ongoing situation in Bangladesh and its far-reaching consequences for the region. The current unrest in Bangladesh is a direct result of the Shaikh Hasina government’s dictatorial and draconian approach to governance. The elections in Bangladesh in January 2024 were marred by widespread allegations of unfair practices, leading to the entire opposition boycotting the electoral process. This undermined the very foundation of democracy and eroded public trust in the political system. Additionally, the previous government’s efforts to silence dissenting voices through vendetta politics were deeply troubling, with prominent opposition leaders being unjustly imprisoned which stifled the democratic discourse and increased political tensions.

The JIH President further stated, “The response of the Shaikh Hasina regime towards protesting students was excessively violent and repressive, akin to the measures used in warfare.  Jamaat-e-Islami Hind calls upon the officials at the helm of affairs of Bangladesh to take immediate and decisive action to restore peace and stability in the country and form and interim Government immediately which have the trust of people. Justice must be delivered to all those who have suffered during this period and the people responsible for this be punished. The interim government must initiate the democratic process without delay to ensure that free and fair elections are conducted, establishing a truly representative and democratically elected government that reflects the aspirations of the Bangladeshi people. Reports in the media indicate that miscreants are exploiting this unrest to vandalize property and commit atrocities against innocent citizens, particularly those from minority communities. We unequivocally condemn these acts of violence and demand immediate measures to ensure the safety and security of minorities and other vulnerable groups. It’s a matter of solace to note that large number of civilians and civil society members are coming forward to ensure protection of religious places and properties belonging to minority communities.

Measures must also be taken to ensure that the internal situation in Bangladesh does not escalate into a security threat for the region and neighboring countries. We also appeal to the protesters and the general populace to prioritize restoring peace and order in the country. It is imperative to safeguard the lives and properties of minorities and vulnerable groups to maintain social harmony.  Jamaat-e-Islami Hind stands in solidarity with the people of Bangladesh during these challenging times and hopes for a swift resolution to the crisis, leading to a peaceful and prosperous future for all.”
