Bengaluru : The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka as part of its routine surveillance of respiratory pathogens. The Union Health Ministry highlighted that while HMPV is not new, its presence in these cases underscores the need for vigilance.
The cases involve two infants admitted to Bengaluru’s Baptist Hospital with bronchopneumonia. A three-month-old female infant was diagnosed with HMPV and discharged after treatment, while an eight-month-old male infant, who tested positive on January 3, is currently recovering. Neither child has a history of international travel, pointing to local circulation of the virus.
HMPV, a globally prevalent respiratory virus, has been linked to illnesses resembling influenza. However, the Health Ministry reassured the public, stating that data from the ICMR and Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) show no unusual surge in influenza-like illness (ILI) or severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) in India.
The Ministry also emphasized India’s preparedness. A recent nationwide health drill demonstrated the country’s ability to manage potential respiratory illness outbreaks. Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to provide updates on global HMPV trends, ensuring timely interventions.
While the situation remains under control, the Ministry urged citizens to stay alert. Surveillance and prompt public health measures remain key in mitigating any future risks associated with respiratory viruses like HMPV.
