Chandigarh, August 3 : In the Chandigarh District Court on Saturday, a retired AIG of Punjab Police shot and killed his son-in-law. There was a domestic dispute between the two families. Both parties had come to the Chandigarh Family Court on Saturday for this matter. The accused has been identified as retired AIG Human Rights, Malwinder Singh Sidhu. The deceased son-in-law, Harpreet Singh, was an ICAS officer in the agriculture department.
According to the information, there had been a domestic dispute between the two families for a few months. Both parties had come to the Chandigarh Family Court for the third time on Saturday for mediation. At around 12 noon, Harpreet Singh arrived at the Family Court with a written agreement along with his parents. The girl’s family arrived at the court at around 1:30 PM.
During the mediation conversation, retired AIG Malwinder Singh Sidhu requested to go to the bathroom. The advocate directed him to the restroom from the room itself, but son-in-law Harpreet Singh offered to show him the way. Harpreet took his father-in-law out of the mediation room, and after a few seconds, the sound of gunfire was heard from outside. There were four to five shots fired one after another.
When the lawyer looked outside the room, Sidhu was seen shooting at his son-in-law with a gun. The advocate locked the room from the inside, and everyone hid under the table. One bullet was fired towards the mediation room door as well. Hearing the gunshots, other staff and lawyers nearby gathered and captured the AIG, locking him in a room.
Upon receiving the information, local police along with court security reached the spot and took the injured Harpreet Singh to Sector-16 hospital, but he died on the way. Besides police officers, FSL teams are investigating the incident site. The area where the shooting took place has been sealed by the police. The District Court’s presiding judge and several other judges have also arrived at the scene.
