Nearly 14.58 lakh cases in Haryana courts & 4.5 lakh cases in High Court pending

According to information, nearly 14.5 lakh cases are under trial in courts in Haryana state and over 4.5 lakh cases under trial in Punjab and Haryana High Court are lying pending  due to shortages of judges in the courts causing delay in providing justice to people. Information also reveals that 39% posts for the judges are lying vacant in district courts in the state. Not only in Haryana, but also courts in neighboring Punjab state as well as in the capital Chandigarh are also facing shortage of judges.

According to information, out of total number of 778 posts of judges in Haryana courts 308 posts are lying vacant as a result nearly24.58 lakh cases  under trial in the courts are lying pending for decision at present delaying not only justice but also inconvenience as well as financial loss to people spending heavy amount of fee to legal advisors fighting their case. In case of neighboring Punjab state nearly 26.2% posts for judges in the courts are also lying pending at present as such 9.23 lakh cases under trial in Punjab courts are pending at present. Out of total number of 797 posts for the judges in Punjab courts 208 posts are lying vacant at present. However, there is no shortage of judges in joint Punjab and Haryana court Chandigarh but still there are 79526 cases lying under trial in Chandigarh courts awaiting decision.

According to National data, there were 5764 posts for judges lying vacant in the courts across the country as on 31st December 2022 having total number of more than 4.32 crore cases lying hanging undecided in the courts in the absence of action by the courts including High Courts in the states all over in the country. As regard Punjab and Haryana High Court Chandigarh, more than 4.47 lakh cases are lying pending at present and there is shortage of 19 judges in this court, since there are total number of 64 judges inPunjab and Haryana e court as against 85 posts, which include 64 permanent and 21 additional judges. According to data available as on  31st December 2022 there were 39 permanent and 27 additional judges in Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh.
