Lucknow: A PIL has been filed in the Allahabad high court seeking directions for conducting the Uttar Pradesh polls in April-May so as to allow the present assembly to complete its term, and also for convenience of voters.
The PIL, filed by activist Pratibha Pandey in the Lucknow bench of the HC, is likely to come up for hearing on December 17.
It states that the term of the present Assembly expires on May 27 hence any proposal for conducting the election earlier won’t be proper. The Union of India and the Election Commission have been sought to be made respondents. The EC had last week asked the Uttar Pradesh Madhyamik Shiksha Parishad (UPMSP) to reschedule examination dates in consultation with it so as to ensure there is no clash with the assembly polls due early next year, giving rise to speculation the polls could be held in February. – PTI
