Punjab Governor lays foundation stone of Baba Namdev Yatri Niwas at Ghoman, Gurdaspur

*Gives grant of Rs. 1 crore for construction of Bhawan in the memory of Bhagat Namdev Ji

Gurdaspur : The Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT, Chandigarh, Banwari Lal Purohit today laid down the foundation stone of the “Sant Namdev Ji Yatri Niwas” dedicated to the memory of Shiromani Bhagat Namdev Ji at his Taposthal (Place of Penance) village Ghoman in Gurdaspur district.

The Governor gave a grant of Rs. 1 crore from his discretionary fund for construction of this building which will have 10 rooms, 1 hall and 1 kitchen. The purpose of this building is to facilitate the devotees visiting this holy place from all over the country.

It is worth mentioning that Bhagat Namdev Ji travelled to various parts of the country starting from Maharashtra and ended up in Punjab where he sojourned in Ghoman village and nearby Bhattiwal village. Bhagat Namdev Ji spent 18 years of his life in Ghoman and in 1350 he attained the enlightenment here in Ghoman. Bhagat Namdev Ji’s Samadhi (Sepulcher) is present in the village Ghoman itself where devotees from all over the world visit this place to pay obeisance.

Bhagat Namdev Ji was born in 1270 in Narsi Vamani village of Maharashtra. He was a prominent saint of the Bhakti movement, who always exhorted ending the inequality. As many as 61 Shabads (hymns) of Bhagat Namdev Ji are included in Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji under 18 ragas, which are a beacon of light for the entire humanity.

The entire life of Bhagat Namdev Ji is a source of inspiration for humanity and every person needs to take guidance from it.

On the occasion of Prakash Parv of Bhagat Namdev Ji, an annual festival is organized in the village Ghoman where a large number of devotees from the country and abroad come to pay homage to him.

A government degree college, in the name of Shiromani Bhagat Namdev ji, spread over 10 acres under Guru Nanak Dev University was established in Kishankot of Gudraspur, in which 500 students are studying.

It is worth mentioning that for the last two years, the ‘Palki Sohala Patrakar Sangh’ has been organizing a cycle yatra from Maharashtra to Punjab, which is personally welcomed by the Governor of Punjab in Chandigarh.
