Increasing pollution in Yamuna river flowing in Haryana on way to Delhi is a matter of deep concern for the residents in the state, since the river is getting polluted from Himachal itself, which was detected during checking at Yamunanagar-Tajewala Head, due to polluted water from rural as well as urban areas on on both sides of river being thrown in it and by the time river resched  Delhi its water gets severely polluted and become unfit for use, which was confirmed by Dr Rakesh Bhardwaj a scientist and chemist associated with Yamuna Action Plan during research few months ago.

According to rules, Bio Oxygen Deland (BOD) level of water in rivers should not exceed 0-6 mg/ litre and cannot be identified as polluted water. But BOD level of Yamuna river at Tajewala was observed up to 6 – 8 mg/litre and by the time river reached Manglora bridge near Karnal BOD level recorded as 15 mg/litre, at the same time it is recorded as 20 mg/ litre when river reaches village Sanoli near Panipat Delhi BOD level of water and by the time Yamuna river reaches Delhi the BOD level of water is recorded as 45 mg/litre unfit for use even for the animals. Dr Bhardwaj said that not only in Haryana, huge quantities of polluted water is also being thrown in Yamuna river water from surrounding rural areas in Uttar Pradesh.

It is claimed that the government spends huge amounts to clean Yamuna river water which turns into rubbish and polluted water due to negligence of the administration and docile attitude of the public. The residents of area on both      side of river feel that it was still time for the state government and the people to come forward and  save Yamuna river water which becomes bathing place for buffaloes and one can see hundreds of buffaloes which make water so muddy and polluted that no one likes to take a dip in it. Another pollution factor is the mixing of sewage water of the adjoining residential areas as well as polluted water released from the industries inserted when flowing between Karnal, Panipat and Delhi, especially when river flowing through 27 km area passes through Ghanaur, Chandrav, Hansu Majra, Kalsouri, Nadiabad, Chhapti Chhapra, Halwana, Dabkoli and Nangli and Jhadoli when polluted water is thrown in the river through drains.
Many residents of the rural areas on both sides of the river alleged that there was no provision of water supply in public toilets in various labour and farmer colonies located near the sides of river, when Yamuna river water is used to clean the toilets and waste water, too, is connected with the river through drains.
