Amritsar : The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has urged the Punjab Government to impose a ban forthwith on the movie ‘Emergency’ in all the cinema halls in the state of Punjab .
In a statement issued here by the SGPC has asked the Punjab Government to impose an immediate ban on the move which was going to release on January 17 as tickets were being sold in advance in the State.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami in a letter to Punjab CM Bhagwant Singh Mann said said that many concocted and distorted facts have been depicted in the controversial movie by sitting BJP MP Kangana Ranaut. He said that if the move was released it would hurt the sentiments and emotions of the Sikh community.
Adding further Dhami said that SGPC was going to submit letter to all the deputy commissioners in Punjab in this regard to stop the release of this movie in any of the theater in Punjab as it would disturb the peaceful situation of the State and SGPC would lodge strong protest over the release of this movie in the State.
Earlier last year in the month of August, SGPC had sent a legal notice to the producers of Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ film, which allegedly misrepresents the character and history of Sikhs, and asked them to remove the objectionable scenes presenting anti-Sikh sentiments. In the notice sent by Advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, legal adviser of SGPC, the producers of the film, including Kangana Ranaut, were asked to remove the trailer released on August 14, 2024, from public and social media platforms and seek a written apology from the Sikh community.
Earlier SGPC had expressed objection to this film, in separate letters written to the Government of India’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting Mr. Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Central Board of Film Certification’s Chairperson Mr. Prasoon Joshi to ban this film.
SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, a legal notice has been sent to the producers of this film including Kangana Ranaut,e said that after the release of the trailer of the Emergency film, many anti-Sikh scenes had come to light, which have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. In the film, the character of Sikhs including the martyr of the June 1984 massacre, Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, an attempt was made to show Sikhs as terrorists and separatists, which is unacceptable and far from the truth.
