Slain Shiv Sena leader cremated as per Hindu rituals

Amritsar, November 6  – The last rites of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri were performed as per Hindu rituals at Durgina Shivpuri cremation ground here today amidst sizable crowd including local politicians besides Durgiana Temple management Temple Management Committee president Lakshmi Kanta Chawla and former Deputy Chief Minister Punjab O.P. Soni.

Earlier, the funeral procession of dead Hindu leader was passed through different locations of the city before reaching the Crematorium in the presence of heavy police security.

However, till yesterday, the family was not ready to cremate the body unless their demands were met. But last evening, Police commissioner Arun Pal Singh and Deputy Commissioner Harpreet Sindh Sudan visited the family and expressed condolence and assured them of a government job and security cover including the proposal of martyr status to Suri to be sent to the Government.

Yesterday amidst tight security the autopsy of Shiv Sena (Taksali) leader Sudhir Suri was carried out. Videography of postmortem was also done by the Government Medical College.

Suri was shot dead on Friday while he was taking part in a protest outside a Gopal Mandhir (Hindu temple) in a busy Amritsar locality of Majitha Road.

Meanwhile, the security around the house of the slain leader has also been enhanced.

There was mixed response in the city to the bandh call given by the various Hindu Shiv  Sena outfits in the  State on Saturday.

Five shots were fired at Suri after which Suri fell unconscious on the spot. He was taken to a private Fortis Escort hospital where he succumbed to bullet injuries.

The accused, Sandeep Singh alias Sunny, who was a shopkeeper in the Gopal Mandhir area, was arrested and the .32 bore licensed weapon used in the crime was seized, police said.

Suri was protesting against the management of Gopal Mandir on Majitha Road — one of the busiest places in the city — after some broken idols and some pictures of Hindu deities were allegedly found on the roadside, which he termed a sacrilege act.

Meanwhile the alleged accused of Suri’s murder Sandeep Sunny who was arrested on Friday immediate after the incident has been produced in the court where the court had given seven days police remand for his interrogation.
