Three times increase in on-line frauds reported in past five years

According to National Consumer Helpline (NCH) recent report, three times increase   in on-line frauds has been identified in past five years in the country, most of these cyber crime cheatings have been found due to on-line purchases and miscellaneous business transactions through bank. Information reveals that during year 2018 there were nearly 60000 on-line fraud cases reported to police in the country which have now been increased to 184000 complaints reported to police stations during year 2022, on an average nearly 15320 on-line fraud cases were registered by police every month in the country, which include maximum number of on-line fraud cases reported in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, Bihar, Haryana and Himachal states. Although, the population of Delhi is much lesser as compared to other state yet it ranks at the third position in the country as regard on-line frauds.

According to NCH report, on-line fraud cases reported at the police stations is being forwarded to police Cyber Crime Cell operating in the district for investigation and action against cheats. Information also reveals that large numbers of such on-line fraud cases are not being reported to police stations by the victims in the country and in maximum number of such complaints cyber cell generally remains unsuccessful to trace out accused. However, there are few states in the country in which on-line frauds have been controlled to large extent due to awareness campaigns launched by the state governments which include Maharashtra state, whereas in Bihar state on-line frauds have witnessed six times increase and in Uttar Pradesh state the number of such on-line frauds has become double in past five years. According to Haryana state police record large number of rackets running fake call centers involved in cheating people were busted in the state most of these functioning at Gurugram and Faridabad during year 2022.

According to National crime Report Bureau information state wise growth in on-line frauds in past five years with effect from 2018 to 2022 has been recorded as from7076 cases to 25484 cases in Uttar Pradesh, from 7704 cases to 14661 cases in Delhi, 3618 cases to 9371 cases in Haryana, 1414 cases to 3972 cases  in Punjab, 588 cases to 1534 cases i9n Jammu-Kashmir, 399 cases to 1281 cases in Himachal and 270 cases to 588 cases in Chandigarh. Report also revealed that most of the victims suffering on-line frauds have been found educated persons usually involved in banks as well as commercial transactions.
