Amritsar: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale today visited Amritsar to take stock of the situation after the incident of desecration of the statue of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar.
Athawale first visited Heritage Street in Amritsar and paid floral tribute to Dr. Ambedkar.
He said that the desecration of the statue of Constitution maker Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar will not be tolerated.
He held a meeting with Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni alongwith other district officials and issued guidelines for strict action in the matter.
He informed that he has been assured by the district administration that proper arrangements will be made to prevent such incidents in future.
Talking to media, Athawale said that Baba Saheb Ambedkar is not only the creator of the Constitution but also a great leader of the country. He said that attempts were made to demolish the statue of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, but his ideas are so strong that can never be erased.
He asked the State Chief Minister of the state should pay attention to such serious incident and proper arrangements should be made to prevent such incidents in future. He said that this incident took place January 26, which raises several questions on the functioning of the police.
Athawale said that the number of communities belonging to Scheduled Castes is higher in Punjab than other states, keeping it into consideration, it is very sad that such an incident has happened in the state.
